The magnetron housed inside each microwave really captivated my attention this is a really wonderful device! The comparison of old to new made a great story for children in my mind-I thought they would get a kick out of seeing a series of books that show the original invention next to what they have in their home. I saw a photograph of the first microwave and was astounded at the size and science that went into its discovery. Just as in the movie, Hidden Figures, that shows the size of the original computer (the size of an entire room), I wondered what else was before us that has gone through rapid change to be part of our lives, without us even thinking about it. I loved them! Old scales, old timers, tickers and glowing button, big goggles and cabinets of glassware. With rapid advancements, computers and machines become archaic so quickly, yet many of these relics were still on my lab bench. Also, I began to get really interested in the evolution of technology and science after working in a research lab and finding old laboratory equipment in the cupboards. Vast majority of the time, nobody notices (or at least doesn’t say anything). Slide the deck by itself between my back & my bag. I remove the trucks before hand and place them in my bag. We run consistent advertisements in skate magazines with scripture printed on skate photos. “The fact that we are a professional skateboard company allows us to be involved in the skate industry so that we can spread the Gospel through our skateboarding. Evie’s strength of character shines through as she handles murderous townsfolk, distrustful ogres, farmers, princes, and much more. Through Evie’s eyes, the reader sees how difficult it is to adjust to her new physique. This is my favourite fairy tale and I enjoyed reading Levine’s take on the story. When Lucinda turns Evie into an ogre for refusing Wormy’s proposal, Levine takes the opportunity to play with the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. She is a focused young woman who knows she is too young to marry, and if she were to marry, it certainly wouldn’t be to her friend Wormy, who she believes only proposed to her because she constantly heals him of his many ailments. Levine answered the questions readers were left to ponder for the last twenty years through the eyes of a new character: the healer Evie, known for her practical nature and caring heart. In this prequel, the reader learns more about the fairy Lucinda, Ella’s mother Eleanor, Ella’s father Peter, Mandy the fairy, and Prince Char’s parents. Levine once again showcased her skills in the Young Adult Fantasy genre with this lively, wholly original story that plays with fairy tales like its predecessor. Ogre Enchanted is a companion novel to Gail Carson Levine’s award-winning novel, Ella Enchanted, which was published twenty years ago. Her first school, unfortunately, lands her far from home, boarding with a brazenly dysfunctional family, teaching pupils who are almost as old as she is, and making order out of chaos and loneliness. This means that Laura has to finally become a teacher. It is time to put away the things of childhood and accept the necessities of providing for her blind sister and preparing to live away from Ma and Pa. In These Happy Golden Years, sixteen-year-old Laura is on the cusp of adulthood. I finally understand why this was one of my mom’s favorite Laura books. These Happy Golden Years resonates in a very special way with me now that I am married. Some of us (ok, me) remembered this so fondly, that a return visit was necessary, putting aside the confines of responsibility to reminisce about the sweetness and magic of childhood and the first true touches of love. Many of us have followed the adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder since our childhood days, growing up alongside her. Laura Grows Up: The Sweetest of Little House His superiors on Nagasaki-Governor Nagai and Ohira Yonemon, chief officer of the island compound of Deshima-want to disarm the Dutch, but Sano, made uneasy by the unfair treatment of the foreign barbarians and drawn by his budding friendship with the ship's surgeon, allows them to keep their weapons-a serious mistake, he realizes, when the evidence points to a Japanese killer and the Dutch commander threatens to attack the city, starting a full- scale war, unless Sano brings him the head of the killer within two days. Jan Spaen, the Dutch East India Company's missing director of trade, is found dead on a chilly beach, and his restless companions aboard a Dutch ship riding in the harbor have to be pacified while Sano investigates his murder. Packed off to a routine inspection of remote Nagasaki by a jealous chamberlain bent on curtailing his access to his lord, samurai detective Sano Ichir is hardly off the boat when trouble strikes. I studied Chinese calligraphy and painting for a brief period in college, and many of the things I learned about the approach of Chinese artists influenced my approach to art. What type of research did you do for this? Tell us about the use of Chinese brushstrokes in Watercress. I don’t want to make it sound like I had a bad childhood or anything. It was during this time that I started to identify as an artist, or at least that art was my “thing.” Because of all the moves, I had a rotating cast of friends and I wonder if I gravitated toward art because it was something that was always there. I lived in three different cities before my second grade year, when my family settled down in a rural town in New Hampshire. How did those experiences shape your work? Your family moved a lot when you were a child. Holiday House sat down with award-winning author and illustrator Jason Chin to discuss his new book, Watercress by Andrea Wang. |
